Discussion Questions

What is something you're afraid of?

How have you demonstrated wisdom this week?

Review

What is a proverb? A short saying that expresses a general truth

What is wisdom? “skillful living”

Dictionary.com – insight, ability to discern or judge what is right, true, or lasting

The ability to choose what is best, not merely what is right or wrong, good or bad.

Wisdom is skillful living.

Why do I want it? To make right decisions, to give good advice, to have peace and security, gaining wisdom is necessary for a growing relationship with Jesus.

Why are we studying proverbs? (WRITE IT DOWN)

  1. To gain wisdom

  2. To develop holy habits

  • Bible Reading

  • Prayer

  • Journaling

What is the fear of the Lord?

TRICK Question

What is the theme verse of Proverbs?

It's a tie between 1:7 and 9:10.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

What is wisdom? “skillful living”

How do we get wisdom according to this verse? Fear the Lord

According to Proverbs 2:5, how do we understand the fear the Lord? By gaining wisdom and understanding. It seems like a loop to me.

What does it mean to fear the Lord? Proverbs 8:13 “to hate evil”, but there's more to it than that.

Here' a four part definition from a website I found (notes on the blog):

  1. The fear of the LORD is a profound love and deep respect for God.

  2. The fear of the LORD is simply taking God seriously – he keeps his promises and expects us to obey his commands.

  3. The fear of the LORD is the attitude that results from knowing that God is watching my every action, weighing my every motive, and aware of my every thought.

  4. The fear of the LORD means to love what God loves, and hate what he hates.

The fear of the Lord is not an easy thing to understand or to explain to someone else, but I believe that when you see the fear of the Lord in someone's life it is unmistakable.

So how do we learn to fear the Lord? What can we do?

  1. Ask for it.

  2. So “no” to evil and “yes” to good.

  3. Living in awe of the presence of God.” --Jason Storie

  4. Spend time with the Word of God and God of the Word. Psalm 119:38 “Establish your word to your servant as that which produces reverence for thee.”

Benefits from fearing the Lord:

  • 10:27 – longer life

  • 14:26-27 – security, rescue, life

  • 15:16 – peace and contentment

  • 16:6 – avoid unnecessary evil

  • 19:23 – life, security, protection
