What do you think of the difficulty level of the study? Easy (1) or Hard (10)?

Let's all strive to make the effort. We all need to exercise our spirits otherwise we will become weak and flabby.

Did you find any common themes as you were reading proverbs last week?

Here are some things I found:

  1. Friendships – I read a lot about what is not good for friendships, and how quickly they can be destroyed. I did read a few verses on the value of having good friends.

  2. Justice – I remember reading a lot of admonitions to kings and the rich on speaking truth, judging rightly, not accepting bribes, and how we should treat the poor.

  3. Tongue – I was struck by the amount of verses that told me how to control my tongue and things I should not say as well as things I should say. I even remember one verse that told me that talking too much was a bad thing. It made me think.

Proverbs Study

Introduction Lesson

Order of Events:

  1. Snack

  2. Announcement from Paulakay Ricketts about the Life Walk

  3. Lesson

  4. Prayer

  5. Games

Start by passing out the notebooks and pens so they can take notes.

Make sure white board is ready.

This is not your notebook, this is your journal for this study. I'll tell you why that's important later. You may use it to take notes for tonight.

We will be studying the book of proverbs for the next two months. I wanted to start off by sharing with you some extra-biblical proverbs that you may find hilarious. These proverbs come from my friend Dan Nice. Keep in mind these may be somewhat pessimistic as is his personality.

(Read the proverbs and let the youth figure out what they mean)

Open Discussion:

  1. What is a proverb?

Definition: an often stated observation regarding something from common experience
Dictionary.com: a short, pithy saying in frequent and widespread use that expresses a basic truth or practical concept
EOT – succinct and persuasive saying proven true by experience

  2. What are some proverbs that you can remember?

  3. Do you have a favorite proverb?

  4. Have you ever read through Proverbs?

  5. What are some themes that you see in the book of Proverbs?

Some things talked about: value of wisdom, guidance for the young, security in wisdom, the wicked man, warning against adultery, warning against violence, the way of folly, friendship, money, work, the virtuous wife

Solomon wrote most of Proverbs. He was King David's son & was king of Israel.

It was written around 6th century B.C.

(There are 2 major forms of wisdom writing in Proverbs:

  1. Chapters 1-9 are of longer construction that are more instructive in nature. It is wisdom for life as taught to the youth by an elder. It is exhortations and commands followed by supporting explanations and encouragements.

  2. The rest of the book displays the other major form which is one sentence proverbial sayings. They are usually given in parallel form where the second line is a direct contrast or carries forward the idea of the first line.

The other form is the numerical saying. It promotes the perception of order.)

Proverbs teaches that all of life is to be lived to the glory of the sovereign Creator, even the mundane things of life.

(The wisdom writers speak of the human condition.

  1. Prologue: the Purpose of the Book (1:1-7)

  2. Wisdom's Instructions (1:8-9:18)

  3. Proverbs of Solomon (10:1-22:16)

  4. Instructions of the Wise Men (22:17-24)

  5. More Proverbs of Solomon, copied by Hezekiah's men (25-29)

  6. The Words of Agur (30)

  7. The Words of King Lemuel (31) )

Notes from a commentary:

"The pages of history are filled with the names of brilliant and gifted

people who were smart enough to become rich and famous but not wise

enough to make a successful and satisfying life. Before his death, one of

the world's richest men said that he would have given all his wealth to

make one of his six marriages succeed. It's one thing to make a living, but

quite something else to make a life."

Purpose of Proverbs

The purpose of Proverbs is found in chapter 1 verses 1-7. Verse 4 will suffice for us here in youth group. Read verse 4.

Prudence – exercise sound judgment in practical affairs (friendships, money, sleeping in, when and how to do your chores, obedience to parents, whether or not you should talk to your friend about something)

Discretion – ability to decide responsibly

Simple goal – To gain wisdom

What is wisdom and why do I need it?

Dictionary.com – insight, ability to discern or judge what is right, true, or lasting

The ability to choose what is best, not merely what is right or wrong, good or bad.

Wisdom is skillful living.

Benefits, joy, rewards, true success, and it is necessary for a growing relationship to God.

List of famous or weird proverbs

  1. 26:11

  2. 26.14

  3. 16:18

  4. 3:5-6

What proverbs are not?

Proverbs != promises (write on board) example Proverbs 22:6

Proverbs != commands (write on board) example Proverbs 22:24-25

Goal: read the proverbs slowly and look for the underlying principle. Example Proverbs 24:16

Read paragraph from EOT page 315 about “Look before you leap.”

Our study's format:

We will be studying through the book of proverbs over the next two months. We will individually read a proverb a day with the chapter corresponding to the date of the month. Today is the 12th so we will read chapter 12 today. Here's what you do:

  1. Pray for the Holy Spirit's help

  2. Read today's chapter

  3. Pick out a verse that stands out to you...write it down in your journal.

  4. Write a handle, a short 2-4 word phrase that helps you remember the main idea of the verse.

  5. Paraphrase the verse (write it out in your own words)

  6. Write a prayer to God of application.

  7. Memorize a verse (one a week)

Then when we get together on Monday nights we'll go through last weeks chapters and have people share what they learned in their reading of proverbs. Our goal through this study is to see all of us grow in wisdom as well as to develop personal habits of daily bible reading, prayer, and journaling. What an opportunity!

Let's try this together:

Let's pretend it's September 1st. Turn to Proverbs chapter 1. Let's pray. Father, please use your holy spirit to help us understand the truth you have for us today. Thank you for listening. Amen.

We read the chapter, and verse 10 stuck out to us. We write down the verse.

Now what is a good handle for verse 10? “Just say no.”

Paraphrase: When my friends ask me to do something shady, I will tell them that I'm not interested.

Write down a prayer: Father, Help me to know right from wrong and to gain in wisdom. Please help me to stand up for what is right when others entice me to do what is wrong. Amen.

Memorize: My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. Proverbs 1:10. KJV

Any questions about the process, the study, etc?

These are your journals. Take it with you...bring it back. Use it. If you need help call/ask us.

There is a free online commentary available at soniclight.com. If you do not have Internet access or not permitted, then ask me for a copy and I'll give it to you on a CD (or email).

Proverbs Study

We've started a new study and a new year of youth group last Monday. We've welcomed quite a few new people as well. We have embarked upon a two-month study of the book of Proverbs to gain wisdom and to develop holy habits of bible ready, prayer, and journaling. We will individually read a proverb each day and pick out one verse to interact with in our journals. Each Monday night we will come together and discuss what we have learned in the last week. We are excited to see how we will all grow in wisdom through this study.
