Abraham offers Isaac
Heb. 11:17-19; Genesis 22:1-19

- Read the history
- v.5—underline “and come again unto you”. Was Abraham lying again (like he had to the kings about Sara), or was he expressing the faith mentioned in Hebrews?
- he makes Isaac carry the wood (ha!)
- v.8—“God will provide himself a lamb”—I think “lamb” is used here metaphorically by Abraham b/c Hebrews says Abraham believed God would raise Isaac from the dead, indicating a belief on Abraham’s part that his son would truly die
- Abraham showed faith by believing in God’s promises even when it didn’t make sense.
- he chose to believe something ridiculous (that Isaac would come back to life) rather than disbelieve God’s promises and disobey His command
- this is like…God tells you that you are going to become a great world leader, but first you must jump out of an airplane from 10,000 ft. with no parachute
- he learned that the safest place to be is where God wants you
- story of missionary in Asia
- left the country with his 2 children b/c of hostilities and persecution that had already killed his wife (he was protecting his family)
- when back in the US, one child was bitten by a poisonous snake under the house, and the father, in his haste to take the child to the hospital, ran over his other child with the car—both children died
- Application
- listen to God’s voice
- do what He says—even when it’s ridiculous
- think about how God might use your obedience for His glory
