We will be doing something different for the next 10-11 weeks. We will be studying what it means to be a man through this workbook called the Five Aspects of Masculinity for Young Men. As the title suggests, this book is geared toward young men. As teenagers you're caught in the middle of wanting more freedom, but sometimes aren't willing to take the responsibility associated with that freedom.

This study will be beneficial to all of us as we learn who God made us to be and what He requires from us. We will be studying these five aspects:

• Lord of the earth

• Husbandman

• Savior

• Sage

• Glory of God

Some of the things we study will be very basic. Other things we study you will have to think about more deeply. Still other things might make you feel uncomfortable because of what God will show you through this study.

To set the tone for our manly study I want us to set for the some goals and expectations that all of us should agree upon. I have written up this document that sets forth the expectations set for us, and if you are willing, I would like for all of us to sign it and date it. This will be posted in the fellowship hall of the church to remind us of our commitment to this study. It will also provide a sense of accountability because others will see this document and see our names signed on it. Your name is one of your most valuable possessions. If you treat it with respect so will others. Proverbs tell us that a good name is more desirable than wealth. If you feel that you cannot fulfill the requirements of the study then do not sign it. Let me read the document for all of us now. You may re-read it when you sign it. I feel that we as leaders need to clearly define our expectations of you. We are expecting a lot, but often when a lot is expected, one rises to the occasion. (Read document and then have those who want to sign it come and sign it one by one.)

It is our goal for all of us to become more masculine through this study as we further understand what it really means to be masculine. The more you put into this study, the more we will all benefit from it. It is my vision that this study will transform the way you think about yourself, work, responsibility, and God, and transform the way you relate to your siblings, parents, co-workers, teammates, the youth group, and others.

Let's get started. Turn to page 1.

Genesis 27

How can it be said that Isaac blessed his sons by faith, considering that he didn’t know whom he was truly blessing?

- full knowledge of any given situation is not a prerequisite to faith

- faith is shown by obedience

- perhaps God made it clear to Isaac that he was to bless the person in front of him, even though Isaac thought that person to be other than who he really was

Understanding is the reward of faith. Therefore seek not to understand that thou mayest believe, but believe that thou mayest understand.

One night a house caught fire and a young boy was forced to flee to the roof. The father stood on the ground below with outstretched arms, calling to his son, "Jump! I'll catch you." The following letter was found in a baking-power can wired to the handle of an old pump that offered the only hope of drinking water on a very long and seldom-used trail across Nevada's Amargosa Desert: "This pump is all right as of June 1932. I put a new sucker washer into it and it ought to last five years. But the washer dries out and the pump has got to be primed. Under the white rock I buried a bottle of water, out of the sun and cork end up. There's enough water in it to prime the pump, but not if you drink some first. Pour about one-fourth and let her soak to wet the leather. Then pour in the rest medium fast and pump like crazy. You'll git water. The well has never run dry. Have faith. When a traveler in the early days of the west, came to the Mississippi, he discovered there was no bridge. Fortunately it was winter and the great river was sheeted over with ice. But the traveler was afraid to trust himself to it, not knowing how thick it was. Finally with infinite caution, he crept on his hands and knees and managed to get halfway over. And then he heard--yes he heard singing from behind. Cautiously he turned, and there, out of the dusk, came another traveler, driving a four-horse load of coal over the ice, singing as he went! God wants us to trust Him, and He is pleased when we show our faith by obeying Him, even if we’re a little nervous and cautious; looking at the faith of other people can and should encourage us to show faith with less trepidation

Isaac marries Rebekah; Rebekah gives birth to twins (Esau first, then Jacob); Father Isaac likes Esau best while Mother Rebekah likes Jacob best; Esau is technically the firstborn son, so all the inheritance of Isaac is supposed to go to him
